GUIDE · PORT FORWARDING

How to open a router or printer page on a remote network

The receipt printer’s setup page, the router’s admin panel or the store’s database live on the customer’s network. With port forwarding you open them in your own browser or tools.

What port forwarding does

VVDesk opens a port on your own PC and carries everything sent to it through the encrypted session to an address on the remote side — the remote PC itself, or another device on its network. Your browser or database tool talks to localhost, and VVDesk does the rest.

  • No VPN and no router changes on either side
  • The person at the desk can keep working on their screen
  • Encrypted end to end, like the rest of the session

The desk owner stays in charge

On the remote PC, the person or admin decides in Settings › Security whether port forwarding is allowed, and whether it may reach only that PC or also its local network — never the public internet. Permanent tunnels, which give a service on the PC a public address that keeps working after you disconnect, are a separate switch there and are off by default.

Questions

Can I reach a database this way?

Yes. Forward a local port to the database’s address and port, then point your database tool at localhost.

Is it the same as a VPN?

No. It forwards only the ports you choose, for as long as you choose, and only where the desk allows it.

Does it work from the command line?

Yes. The vvdesk command line can open forwards too, for scripts and RMM tools.
