ENGINEERING · OUR OWN CODEC

How VVDesk keeps text sharp and the picture fast

Many remote desktops send the screen as one standard video stream. That is simple, but text gets blurry and every pixel costs bandwidth. VVDesk uses VVR, a codec we designed and built ourselves for remote desktop, which treats the screen as what it mostly is — still text and windows with a few moving parts.

Only what changed

When you type in a document, only the few letters that changed travel to the other side — not a screenful of video. That keeps sessions light on slow and mobile connections, and leaves room for the moments when a lot changes at once.

Things that come back appear at once

Menus open and close, pages scroll, and windows return to what they showed a moment ago. VVR recognises those situations and reuses what the other side already has, so closing a menu or scrolling back feels immediate instead of redrawing the whole area.

Smooth where things move, sharp everywhere else

A video, an animation or a window being dragged is sent as smooth video, using the graphics card where it can, while the text around it stays pixel-exact. When the movement stops, that area becomes exact again.

The whole screen first, every detail soon after

On a slow connection, a screen full of photographs could take seconds to arrive. VVR shows you the whole screen almost at once and sharpens the details in the background — in one of our tests the first screen arrived about ten times faster.

It follows your connection

VVR keeps an eye on how quickly pictures arrive and adjusts before the screen falls behind, then raises the quality again when there is room. The Quality, Balanced and Speed settings in the session let you choose the trade-off.

Questions

Why does text stay sharp in VVDesk?

Because text is sent exactly. Only the moving parts of the screen are sent as video.

Does VVDesk use the graphics card?

Yes, for the moving parts of the screen where the computer has a suitable graphics card.

What should I choose on a slow connection?

Choose Speed in the session toolbar. VVR then sends less and adapts the picture to the connection.
